Margaret Guenther on Play

In her book, Holy Listening, Margaret Guenther, a spiritual director in Washington, DC says,

“…play has a real place in the serious work of spiritual direction, and I try to find ways to introduce it. This calls for gentle perseverance; although some directees don’t mind, or even welcome “penitential assignments”, they are frightened at the prospect of play. So when I suggested that Alice make a list of at least three ways in which God might delight in her, she declared she couldn’t think of a single thing …I encouraged her to play with the idea, to pay attention to the small, seemingly trivial things that came to her mind. At our next meeting, she announced with a smile that God might delight in her tennis game, her pleasant voice, and she fact that she had managed to complete college while working part-time.”
